Reduce Variables

It’s sleek.
It’s the designer’s dress code, if you’re “cool.”
It makes getting dressed in the morning easy. Two decisions.
It’s slimming.
It makes not giving a shit about clothing brands easy. Or at least kind of easy.
It makes you feel guilty, though, when you like something colorful.
It makes your closet look good—neat, simple, organized—even though I keep the doors closed.
It’s a talking point, weirdly.

I don’t think I’ve ever thought back to why I chose to start dressing in all black. In my industry, it’s common, seen as kind of cool, but not prevalent. So are unique glasses, interesting accessories, talking eloquently about design, and rebelling against all of that.

I haven’t always worn all black. I started going that direction when I began really framing the experience I wanted to have in the profession. What could I do within it? How could I contribute? What would that look like?

It’s probably linked to my love of minimalism as an aesthetic, one that’s not easy to stay true to. Then again, there isn’t really a standard amount of minimalism; it’s a very personal quantity. I don’t need there to be a reason for the all black direction. It’s just part of me now.
